Baby massage is a gentle and soothing form of touch therapy specifically designed for infants. During baby massage, caregivers use gentle strokes and rhythmic movements and songs to massage their babies. Baby massage can be incorporated into daily routines such as changing nappies, getting baby dressed or performed after bathing to help babies relax and sleep better.
Babies can start enjoying the soothing benefits of baby massage from as early as 6 weeks. When your newborn is settled at home and you feel ready, you can introduce gentle massage to help them relax, bond, and even sleep better.
Baby Massage Classes are usually offered from 6 weeks until 1 year old, or baby is on the move. In Ireland, Baby Massage Classes should be provided by certified instructors. The body governing baby massage instructors is the Irish Chapter of the International Association of Infant Massage (I.A.I.M.). You will find Online and In Person Baby Massage Courses so if you are in a rural area or getting to a location is difficult the online classes are perfect.
In a baby massage class, parents and caregivers learn gentle techniques to massage their babies in a safe and nurturing environment. Here’s what typically happens:
1. Introduction: The class usually starts with a brief introduction where the instructor explains the benefits of baby massage and what to expect during the session. A quick chat and bonding session for the parents or caregivers about their babies may also occur.
2. Demonstration and Practice: The instructor demonstrates specific massage techniques on a doll or model baby, showing how to apply gentle pressure on different parts of the baby’s body. There may be songs or nursery rhymes to sing along with while practicing these techniques on their own babies, often starting with the legs and feet before moving to the arms, chest, back, and face.
3. Bonding Time: As parents massage their babies, the instructor encourages making eye contact, talking, and singing to the baby to enhance bonding and communication.
4. Feedback and Support: Throughout the class, the instructor provides feedback and answers any questions parents may have. There’s also an opportunity to discuss any concerns, such as handling a fussy or restless baby during massage.
5. Group Interaction: Often, there’s time set aside for parents to interact with each other, share experiences, and build a supportive community.
Baby massage classes are typically open to any parent or caregiver who wants to learn the gentle art of baby massage. This includes mums, dads, grandparents or care givers. Whether you’re a first-time parent or an experienced one, baby massage classes are a great way to connect with your little one while also learning valuable techniques to soothe and comfort them. Some Baby Massage Instructors even offer Dad’s Baby Massage Classes and special Father’s Day Baby Massage Discounts.
There are many different oils you can use for baby massage. However, it is recommended by the IAIM that you use a scent-free, plant- based oil, which is cold-pressed, such as rapeseed oil. Oils such as peanut oil, olive oil and mustard oil are not recommended due to allergies and potentially damaging or drying out babies skin.
Typically, the class provider will have everything you need, including oil, mats, towels, or wipes. It’s a good idea to bring a change of clothes for your baby, along with nappies and a comforter, just in case your little one gets so relaxed they drift off to sleep.
Baby Massages prices vary by county and provider. You will see classes ranging from €120 – €200.Some providers offer discounts if parents sign up together or if you have twins. You may also find Family Resource Centres and potentially HSE may run low cost baby massage classes on occasions.
